Why should you eat nuts after 40?

Nuts have been touted as superfoods lately. Thanks to their high protein and fiber content, they are great for breakfast or after a hard day or workout. They contain a large number of different vitamins and also healthy unsaturated fatty acids. All of these nutrients have countless benefits for our health.

However, according to the latest scientific research, one group of people should eat nuts regularly. These are people over 40. Regular consumption of nuts at this age reduces the risk of dementia that could appear later.

In a study published in the English newspaper The Independent , regular consumption of nuts after the age of 40 reduces the risk of dementia that could appear later in life.

Researchers from the National University of Singapore followed more than 17,000 people between 1993 and 2016. In the first phase, they monitored their diet and eating habits, and later focused on the cognitive functions of their brains.

Those who started eating nuts two or more times a week after age 40 had up to 1/5 fewer memory problems at age 60 and older compared to people who ate nuts once a month.

This study further showed that people who ate nuts after age 40 at least once a week had up to 19% fewer memory problems between the ages of 60 and 80. 

The results of this study are also confirmed by another study conducted by the University of South Australia. In a study of approximately 5,000 people over the age of 55, it was confirmed that eating two tablespoons of nuts or high-quality nut butter a day is enough to improve cognitive function. People who consumed nuts in such doses achieved up to 60% better thinking and memory results compared to those who ate nuts very rarely or not at all.

And what is actually hidden behind it?

Nuts are full of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, which help maintain higher concentration and improve memory during demanding tasks.

After consuming nuts, the frequency of brain waves also increases, which helps us think, learn, and remember, whether old or new knowledge.

One of the nuts that had the highest positive impact on brain function in several studies was pistachios. In addition to improving memory during learning, they also improved information absorption and increased rapid eye movements during sleep. These are especially important for maintaining good immunity and also good and deep sleep.

As we can see, nuts are a group of healthy foods. In addition to improving brain function, they can also help you lose weight, improve and, most importantly, maintain healthy cholesterol, as well as keep your blood vessels and heart healthy.

It's up to you whether you eat nuts for breakfast or as a snack or an afternoon snack. However, one thing is key. Always choose only the highest quality nuts and only from verified sources. Never buy nuts that do not have a stated origin. It can very easily happen that such nuts are stuffed with various chemicals from various sprays, and in the end they can do you more harm than good.
