Almonds – everything you should know about them.

by Ján Vasil

We have already written about almonds and their health benefits in this older article. At that time, we discussed in detail the history of almonds , their benefits, as well as their negative impact on the ecology .

Today we would like to focus on almonds as such . We will tell you more information about what almonds actually are, how and where they grow and when they are harvested. In addition, we will tell you whether it is possible to grow almonds in our country, how to store them properly and whether they are suitable during pregnancy.

What are almonds?

Here we would like to note that almonds are not nuts as such . Almonds are the edible kernels of the fruit of the almond tree, which belong to the group of stone fruits, just like cherries, peaches or plums.

After the flowers bloom, the fruit begins to form, which consists of pulp and seed, i.e. almonds . Ripe almonds are usually harvested from the beginning of August to the end of September.

How do almonds grow?

As we have already mentioned, almonds grow on almond trees. These trees grow to a height of 4 to 10 meters and are usually planted next to each other to form large orchards. In one orchard there are several types of almonds, which helps in proper pollination of the flowers.

An interesting fact is that pollination of almond flowers requires several types of trees, each with a different genetic code . If we planted trees of only one type in an orchard, pollination would not occur and the trees would stop bearing fruit.

Where do almonds grow?

Almonds generally originate from Iran and surrounding countries and first appeared around 3000 BC. The first almond trees grew in the wild and were only collected by random farmers. Almonds were a favorite delicacy of the wealthy and were even found in the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun .

Today, almonds are grown mainly in the United States , Spain, Australia, Iran, Turkey, Morocco, and Greece .

The United States is the world's largest almond producer, with an annual production of around 2.4 million tons. Most American almonds come from California.

How to grow almonds at home?

Although growing almonds seems like a simple task , the truth is different. To grow almonds at home, you will need about 12 whole almonds with their shells on (not peeled almonds ), a plastic bag that can be sealed, some soil, and a pot.

In addition, you will also need time.

To start the process, immerse the whole almonds in a container of cold water and let them soak for about 8 hours. If you are wondering why you need so many almonds to plant one tree, it is important to note that out of all the almonds , only some of them will be suitable .

Using a nutcracker, gently press the almonds until the shell cracks. Leave the shell intact and do not remove the kernels.

After this step, place a lightly dampened cotton ball or kitchen towel in a plastic bag, followed by the almonds. Seal the bag tightly and place it in a warm , but dry place in your home. The top of your refrigerator is best.

Leave the almonds wrapped in this way to germinate for 2-3 months. After about two weeks, check the moisture inside the bag and if the cotton wool is dry, gently pour water on it. However, be careful not to make it too wet or your almonds could get moldy. You can repeat this action several times.

After your almonds sprout, place them on top of a pot of soil and cover with about an inch of soil. Water and place in a warm , sunny spot.

Transplant the almonds into the garden in a sunny spot only when they reach a height of about 50cm.

The best time to plant almonds is spring or autumn.

How to store almonds?

The best way to store almonds is to place them in an airtight container or bag and put them in the refrigerator or freezer. This will prevent the almonds from oxidizing faster and will keep them fresh for several weeks.
