The history of peanut butter dates back to the 19th century. In 1884, Canadian inventor Marcellus Gilmore Edson patented a paste made from roasted peanuts. In 1895, American physician Dr. John Harvey Kellogg patented a process for producing peanut butter from raw peanuts. Originally, peanut butter was developed as a nutritious source of protein for elderly people who had difficulty chewing solid food.
